Executor Feuds

Court battles where an executor of a will is accused of mishandling an estate have trebled in recent times. In 2013, there were 368 claims against executors but only 107 in 2012 and 47 in 2010. The rise is mainly down to an increase in the number of people appointing friends and family members as executors. Experts recommend choosing one family member and one professional, such as a solicitor or accountant, to carry out the instructions in your will. But people are relying on amateurs in a bid to cut down on the costs. Rising house prices mean the amount of money at stake can tempt amateur executors to raid the estate for themselves or try to stop any money going out of the family.
